NLS Cartridge: Accessible Bible Library Education (ABLE) Request
NLS Cartridges are necessary for people who are blind, have low vision, or have print disabilities because they provide access to information in a format that is easy to use independently, without requiring internet access or technical skills. The NLS Digital Talking Book Player includes large, tactile, easy-to-identify buttons which support simple and accessible navigation for users of all ages with a variety of disabilities and experience levels.
Request a free Accessible Bible Library Education (ABLE) cartridge, specially designed with blind accessibility for use with the National Library Service (NLS) Digital Talking Book Player. Advanced model DA1 or DA2 models required. ABLE is also available on an SD card for handheld Victor Reader talking book players and on USB thumb drives for MP3 players, computers, and smart devices for use with blind-related reading technology.
All publications included in ABLE are downloaded from JW.org and reorganized into a specialized folder structure designed specifically for NLS Digital Talking Book Players and Victor Reader devices to support advanced navigation features, including search, bookmarks, chapter navigation, file navigation, and easy browsing of large libraries.
For compatibility with NLS Digital Talking Book Players and Victor Readers, audio files are specially prepared using device-compatible formatting and optimized encoding settings for accessibility. This helps ensure dependable operation, efficient storage, clear audio quality, and reliable access to search, bookmarking, playback, and simple navigation features throughout the entire library.
For Victor Reader users, the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures is included in DAISY Talking Book format, allowing full DAISY navigation by Bible book, chapter, and verse. The DAISY files are in the correct unzipped format designed to be recognized by Victor Reader, which require system folders such as $VRDTB to provide indexing and library information, allowing the device to recognize content correctly and support features such as bookmarks, reading position memory, library navigation, and DAISY navigation. Additional audio publications are organized into separate publication folders designed to work seamlessly with the Victor Reader library system and the indexing structure.
Each ABLE cartridge, SD card for Victor Readers, and USB drive comes preloaded with more than 200 hours of audio content, including the complete New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, Bible-based books and brochures, Bible dramas, feature films with audio description, and music with audio-described lyrics.
A table of contents is provided at the bottom of this page.
Enjoy Life Forever! includes accessible features. A soft bell tone is heard as an audio cue to indicate appropriate places to pause for discussion and review, which aids both blind students and blind teachers. Scripture citations are included from the New World Translation, and video content includes audio description to provide a fully accessible format for blind and low-vision readers.
When available, original JW.org videos with audio description are used. For accessibility, when audio description is not yet available, qualified describers vocalize what is happening on screen. Those videos will be replaced when official audio-described videos become available.
The ABLE cartridge is not designed for the DS1 model. Users who receive a DS1 should contact the National Library Service at 888-657-7323 and request an exchange for the DA1 Advanced Player with bookmarking and navigation features.
The DA1 Advanced Player includes all of the features of the DS1 and looks identical. However, the DA1 includes an additional row of navigation buttons located under the speaker and directly above the raised tactile horizontal line across the center of the player. These additional controls allow quick navigation between books and chapters, as well as the ability to insert and jump to personal bookmarks.
The DA2 represents a major redesign of the NLS talking book player. Unlike the DS1 and DA1, the DA2 includes built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, internal storage, and direct access to BARD downloads. The ABLE cartridge is fully compatible with DA1 and DA2 NLS Digital Talking Book Players.
